March 19, 2014. The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce put on its annual Spelling Bee for Grown-Ups, sponsored by Yadkin Bank, on Tuesday, March 18. The event was a success, and a the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce was able to write a check for $1,000 to the Watauga Youth Network last night from the proceeds.
The overall winners of the competition were the Chetola Resort Word Nerds. The winners for best team name were the Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Bee-Lief Crew and the Best Theme went to Skyline Skybest Black Eyed Bees.
“We had 21 teams this year, and it was a lot of fun!” said Wysteria White of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce.
“We sponsor the spelling bees for the schools so we use this as a fundraising opportunity to support education in the High Country.” said Dan Meyer, President of Boone Chamber of Commerce.
Western Youth Network was awarded with $1,000 check to benefit their after school tutoring program and prizes for the night were provided by: The Town Tavern Blowing Rock, Papa John’s, Daniel Boone Inn, Canyon’s, Bandana’s Bar B Que, The Peddler Steak House, Boone Bagelry, Appalachian Cultural Affairs and Blue Horse Promotions.
The Grown-Up Spelling Bee took place at 5:00 p.m on Tuesday, March 18 in the Watauga High School gymnasium.
