Kindergarten Orientation Schedule Announced for WCS

March 18, 2013. Kindergarten orientation takes place this spring for children that will enter kindergarten in the Watauga County Schools in August, 2013.  The dates for orientation vary by school, starting with Bethel on March 28-29 and ending with Parkway on May 6-7.

The complete schedule and school phone numbers are provided below.  The schedule is also posted on the “Parent Links” page of the WCS website (www.watauga.k12.nc.us).

Kindergarten orientation is for children who will be 5 years old on or before August 31, 2013.  Children can be enrolled in kindergarten only at the school in their assigned attendance area and parents must attend orientation at that school.  Parents who are uncertain which school attendance area they live in can confirm this information online through a link for “Attendance Area and Bus Route Information” available through the “Parent Links” heading on the WCS website (www.watauga.k12.nc.us).  Parents who need this information and do not have internet access should call Transportation Director Jeff Lyons at 264-6391. 

Parents need to bring the following documents to register children for kindergarten: a certified original birth certificate; proof of immunizations; a copy of a physical exam completed since August, 2012; and two documents providing proof of current address.  A complete list of the documents accepted for proof of residency is available on the Parent Links page of the WCS website or on request from school offices.  The immunizations that must be documented include five for DPT (diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus), 4 for polio, 3 for Hepatitis B, 2 for MMR (mumps/measles/rubella), and 1 each for varicella (chickenpox) and Hib.

Parents should contact the school their child will attend to confirm orientation times and additional details about registration at their school.    

In the event that winter weather forces the postponement of kindergarten orientation at Bethel, Cove Creek, or Valle Crucis, the orientation dates at these schools will be shifted to April 18 and 19.
