Junaluska Jubilee in Boone Slated for June 15, Celebrates Heritage of Historic Junaluska Community

May 30, 2013. Boone’s historic Junaluska community will hold its Second Annual Junaluska Jubilee on Saturday, June 15. The Jubilee events will be held in the Boone Mennonite Brethren Church on Church Street in Boone. Junaluska is one of Western North Carolina’s oldest continuously occupied African-American settlements. 

Junaluska Heritage AssociationAt 11 a.m. there will be a celebration  of the life and leadership of Rev. Morris Rockford (Rock) Hatton, Sr. Rev. Hatton served during the 1930’s to the 1960’s as a beloved pastor of the eleven Mennonite Brethren Churches in the North Carolina District of Mennonite Brethren Churches. Rev. Hatton was also instrumental in helping establish several new churches during those years.

Entertainment scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in the church will include storytelling, a magic show and a performance by the Boone Mennonite Brethren Gospel Choir. 

The public is invited to attend. Admission is free. The Junaluska neighborhood and the church are located off Queen Street, where parking for the event will be available. For further information about the Junaluska Jubilee, call 828-264-6578.

The nonprofit Junaluska Heritage Association is a partnership of residents of the Junaluska community and townspeople from the Boone area, assisted by faculty at Appalachian State University and others.
