Master fiddler and banjo player, Dan Gellert, will perform a concert at the Jones House, continuing the 2016 Indoor House Concerts series, on April 20, starting at 7:30 p.m.
“Dan Gellert is a legend in the field of old time American music,” saysFiddler Magazine. “He has given a lot of thought to what it takes to make the music sound and feel like the field recordings and old 78 rpm records he has listened to.”
Indeed, Gellert is a storehouse of knowledge about traditional fiddle and banjo music from rural American players and early commercial recording artists of the 1920s and 30s. His music has been called “not for the faint of heart,” “commanding and uncompromising,” and “complete and detailed.”
“Dan Gellert is an old-time musician’s musician,” says concert organizer, Mark Freed. “He is not the most common household name amongst folk and American roots artists, but for those into fiddle and banjo tunes, there is none better.”
Gellert grew up in New Jersey and got inspired to learn more about roots music during the folk revival of the 1960s. He learned to play banjo, guitar, fiddle, and sing lots of the old and traditional songs and tunes. Gellert became known for taking his time and really developing his playing and singing for each piece.
Gellert has played and recorded with numerous musicians over the years, including a recording of fiddle and banjo duets with his longtime friend, Brad Leftwich. Gellert released a solo recording in 2004, which was received with much acclaim from folk and American roots music enthusiasts.
The concert is produced by the Town of Boone’s Cultural Resources Department in association and collaboration with Appalachian State University and Dr. Cece Conway’s Black and Global Banjo and Fiddle Roots concerts and productions.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, with the doors opening at 7:00 p.m. Concerts take place in the Mazie Jones Gallery in the Jones House, and there is a limit of 40 seats for the performance. Advanced reservations are encouraged, as the show is expected to sell out. Seats are $20 per person and will include an opportunity to meet the artist.
