Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music Opens Fall Concert Series with Strictly Clean and Decent Saturday, Oct. 4

Sept. 27, 2014. Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music kicks off its fall concert series with regional favorite, Strictly Clean and Decent, presenting a show titled Remembering Earl and Doc. The concert is set for Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Blowing Rock School auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Strictly Clean and Decent Band photoStrictly Clean and Decent will play homage to Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson, two local treasures who became international icons of traditional music. Credited with popularizing the three-finger style of banjo playing, Earl Scruggs was featured with Bill Monroe and The Bluegrass Boys, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and The Foggy Mountain Boys, and the Earl Scruggs Revue.

Doc Watson’s rise to popularity began in 1960 with the revival of American folk music and his flatpicking guitar style laid the foundation for generations of traditional guitarists.

Neither Earl nor Doc drew musical lines to segregate or define traditional music, knowing it would surely stifle to extinguish it. Strictly Clean and Decent will draw from the wide-ranging repertoire of these Grammy Award winners and will celebrate the legacy of these North Carolina musicians.

Patrick and Kay Crouch will be joined by Rick Stapleton on bass for this performance as they intertwine stories that highlight the careers of both Doc and Earl. JSMHM director, Rodney Sutton, said, “What a treat it is for us to be able to return to Blowing Rock for three straight weeks of Saturday night fall concerts. I look forward to offering High Country supporters of JSMHM the opportunity to share the talents of some of Joe’s favorite performers.”

Strictly Clean and Decent is an acoustic trio that features the singing and playing of husband and wife Patrick and Kay Crouch, whose blend of brilliant vocal harmonies tops a solid instrumental foundation. They are dedicated to performing a variety of musical styles in an acoustic setting.

Their eclectic repertoire includes modern folk songs by American, Canadian and Irish songwriters, the fiery breakdowns and songs of family and home found in both traditional and contemporary bluegrass settings and centuries-old Celtic airs and dance tunes. All of this is peppered with a healthy dose of popular jazz standards, swing and western swing music and a few classic country tunes thrown in to provide a program certain to be enjoyed by all.
