In celebration of its 25th Anniversary Season, Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music is pleased to announce its 2018 Indoor Concert line-up! This years line-up features 5 matinees and 10 evening concerts presented at comfortable climate-controlled venues, including the Harvest House Performing Arts Venue in Boone and the Blowing Rock School Auditorium in downtown Blowing Rock.

Twenty-four years ago Joe Shannon started Mountain Home Music with the very first concert held in Our Daily Bread restaurant in downtown Boone. Shannon stated he wanted to honor the musicians, dancers, storytellers, and poets of the Appalachian region by providing a venue where they could entertain and showcase their talents to a listening and paying audience. Later, he restated the same idea by saying, “Mountain Home Music presents world class Appalachian performers that you’ve probably never heard of.” Shannon passed away from cancer in May of 2014, and JSMHM is dedicating its 25th Anniversary Season to Shannon’s memory.
JSMHM director, Rodney Sutton, stated – “After 24 years, there are some traditions that have strong support from our audiences and we try and include these shows every year. We will kick off our summer concerts with a Memorial Day Weekend Saturday show on May 26th, as the hot picking young bluegrass band, Cane Mill Road and David Johnson, honors those who have died in service while defending our nations freedom. David Johnson and the Mountain Home Bluegrass boys will share the stage with the King Street Brass Band for the annual Fourth of July Grass and Brass Celebration. Our final national holiday show will feature The VW Boys with Tim White from Song of the Mountain paying tribute to the working men and women of America, on the Friday of Labor Day Weekend”, Sutton added.
Along with the VW Boys, appearing for the first time at a JSMHM concert will be Grammy Award winner, “The American Songster” – Dom Flemons. He is a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, the black string band that took the nation by storm a couple of years ago. Flemons will be featuring music from his new recording project, “Black Cowboys”.
Other performers returning to the JSMHM are the perennially favorite, The Jeff Little Trio. Other old time musicians featured are The Sheets Family, Trevor McKenzie and Dori Freeman and Family. Also making a return to JSMHM are old friends Puddingstone with Patrick Crouch. Scottish Fiddle Champion, Jamie Laval will be featured in the annual Celtic Christmas Concert on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Riding on the success of the “Pay as You Exit” concerts, JSMHM will present five matinees spread across the year from June to October. The matinee line-up includes the John Cockman Family, Strictly Strings, Clay Lunsford and Matthew Weaver, Lois Hornbostel and Ehukai Teves, and Glen Bolick and Bobby McMillan.
The JSMHM season will end as always with its An Appalachian Christmas Concert, a benefit for the Hospitably House and Santa’s Toy Box. This year this show will take place on Friday, December 14th at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone.
Sutton stated, “On behalf of the JSMHM board of directors, I would like to invite everyone to join us in attending our 2018 concerts as we honor the memory of Joe Shannon in our 25th Anniversary Season.”
Tickets for all concerts(except the matinees) are $18 in advance and $20 at the door. Student tickets are $5. Children 12 and under are free. Advance tickets may be purchased online though the Mountain Home Music website at Mountainhomemusic.org
