If you’re still making plans for the weekend, consider heading out to Jack Hicks Garage in Elk Park for its annual gospel singing event on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 20. Don’t forget to pack your lawn chair, and get ready for great music for a great cause!

The Inspirations

The annual event will feature performances from KC and the Elk Valley Boys, the Primitive Quartet, Archie Watkins and Smokey Mountain Reunion, followed by a finale performance from the well-known four-part harmony quartet The Inspirations.

“Originating in the heart of God, developed in His word and will, the Inspirations continue to spread the gospel through their music with enthusiasm, vigor and an unyielding dedication as they have since their formation,” the group’s website explains.

Donations will be accepted to support the Tri-State Children’s Home in Bristol, Tennessee.

The singing is hosted annually and sponsored by business owner Jack Hicks, who offers the music from the kindness of his heart to share the word of God and get the community involved in raising funds for the children’s home.

“Jack has been doing this singing for several years now and it grows in attendance each year,” said Mark Parlier, a friend of Hicks. “He never asks for any spotlight, just for people to come and enjoy the music and the fellowship.”

The event offers free admission, parking and concessions for folks in the crowd, ensuring that anyone in the community can come together to show their support no matter what.

“There are a lot of people in this area that don’t have the money to go to events like this, but they can come to enjoy this if they have something to donate or not,” said Robert Burleson, a Jack Hicks employee. “It makes no difference. The money raised really helps the children’s home and Jack really wants to help them.”

Burleson said singing saw a crowd of close to 900 attendants last year, and a large showing is expected again this time around.

Doors open at 4 p.m. and tunes begin at 5 p.m. at the garage, located at 7221 N U.S. Highway 19 E in Elk Park.
