April 1, 2013. All lanes on I-77 near the Virginia-North Carolina state line are now open after the brutal 95-vehicle pileup that included tractor-trailers and left three dead and 25 injured, according to WDBJ7-TV.
Images taken at the scene showed flames, charred vehicles being bulldozed by road crews and multiple tractor-trailers on its’ side among dozens of battered vehicles.
The TV station reported, “Virginia State Police officials say excessive fog in the Fancy Gap Mountain area could be to blame for the series of accidents.”
The pileup began at 1:15 p.m., and all southbound and northbound lanes were closed until nearly midnight due to accident responders using the lanes to access the crash location. It wasn’t until this morning that all the lanes opened up.
