The 14th annual Mile High Kite Festival atop Beech Mountain held over the weekend was a success with an estimated 1,000 people attending the event each day on Saturday and Sunday.

“We were very pleased with the turnout and very, very happy about the weather,” said Lauren Mills of the Beech Mountain Chamber, which sponsored the event along with Richmond Air Force Kite Club and WACKOS, the Wings Across Carolina Kiting and Okra Society.

The weekend was generally sunny and breezy, perfect for flying kites or spectating the affair. The event took place in the big grassy field across from Town Hall, and the kite clubs held demonstrations.

Each day, the first 150 children under 13 years of age received a complimentary kite, and within a couple hours or so of the event beginning at 10 a.m., those kites were all given away.
