Humane Society Sets No-Kill Goal for June, Will Host Adoptathon Eventon Saturday

Watauga Humane Society is once again partnering with North Shore Animal League of America, the world’s largest No-Kill shelter, to bring you a month-long Pet Adoptathon, with the goal of putting no animal down for lack of space during the month of June.Watauga-Humane-Society-Logo_JPEG

June is a busy month at many animal shelters, often the busiest of the year, due to puppy and kitten season. Puppy and kitten season is the time of year when shelters receive the largest number of unwanted litters and when euthanasia often spikes, due to lack of funding for medical treatment and surgeries, an insufficient number of willing foster families and more animals coming into the shelter than there are adopters taking animals out of the shelter.

In 1995, North Shore Animal League created the first Pet Adoptathon ® with a simple yet profoundly important goal: saving the lives of homeless animals and finding them permanent loving homes. Since then, over 2,000 shelter partners and rescue groups around the globe joined together with NSAL to make Pet Adoptathon a phenomenal success. Nearly half a million animals, to date, have been saved through Pet Adoptathon, the largest cooperative adoption event in the world.

Watauga Humane Society’s Pet Adoptathon will last all month long, but will peak with Watauga Humane Society’s Midnight Madness event, beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 20.. The Adoption Center will stay open unitl midnight, all in an effort to alleviate crowding in the shelter, when the shelter is filled to the maximum with pets in need of a home. This is a great chance for anyone to come out during some off hours and adopt!

Not only might you have a really great time and find a new best friend, and save a life, you can save big on your adoption, with adoption fees slashed in half from 9 p.m. to midnight, for anyone wearing pajamas. Come early and let our adoption staff help you pick out the perfect pet for your lifestyle, whether you are seeking a hiking dog, a star gazing cat or a genuine movie-watching couch potato!

Not adopting? Be sure to wear your pajamas anyway. Our staff will be dressed to the nines in their family friendly nightwear and we even hear there may be a prize for the dog, cat or small animal dressed in the best pajama outfit. There will also be a prize for the best animal/owner pj look alike and a special goody bag for the animal with the naturally sleepiest looking eyes. Photos will be taken and winners announced on Facebook on June 21.

Hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks will be served from 6-9 p.m. to benefit the animals and there will be an animal-themed movie marathon starting at 6 p.m. in the Turchin Education Room at the Adoption Center! All movies will be G rated between 6-9 p.m. and PG/PG-13 after 9 p.m. Children and youth under the age of 15 must have an adult in attendance. Bring a fleece blanket (used is fine) to sit on and consider donating it to the animals when you are done! Pet food pantry donations (dog or cat food) are also accepted.

Those interested in sponsoring Watauga Humane Society’s Pet Adoptathon event, sponsoring an animal, or making a donation to support this wonderful, month-long event, should call 828-266-9843 for more information. No-kill is a wonderful way to run an animal shelter, but no one ever said it would come cheap or easy. Lifesaving depends on you!
