Open House event July 17 features Springhouse Farm
BOONE, NC – July 24, 2017 At Hospitality House, summer means celebrating local food and they are hosting the third of a four-part Summer Food Series Open House on Monday, July 17. This night’s menu, featuring Springhouse Farm and The Gardens at Hospitality House, will be Garlic Bratwurst and Butternut Squash Roast, Goat Cheese Tomato Gratin, Organic Garden Salad and Peach Cobbler.
Hospitality House welcomes everyone to take part in this free community meal, between 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., as they showcase some of the finest local food being grown in the High Country and support local farmers in the High Country Local First and Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture networks.
Springhouse Farm, located in Vilas, grows certified organic produce and raises pasture and is named for an original feature of the farmhouse, built in the late 1800’s. The springhouse, still intact, cooled food using naturally cold water from a nearby spring. Previously part of a 45 acre tract farmed by a family of five, the soil still turns up arrowheads carved from granite on the land. Mindful of the ingenuity of the springhouse and the deep history of the land, Springhouse Farm uses environmentally responsible methods to nourish the community in a sense of stewardship. They never use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or GMO seeds. Hospitality House believes that everyone should have access to healthy, locally sourced, fresh food.
Additional local suppliers include Owens Farm and Brushy Mountain Orchard in Wilkes County, Goldenrod Gardens in Avery County, Lively Up Farm in Valle Crucis, Heritage Homestead Goat Dairy and Cheek Farmstead Creamery in Ashe County and Against the Grain in Zionville.
Since 1984, the mission of Hospitality House has been to rebuild lives and strengthen community by providing a safe, nurturing, healthy environment in which individuals and families experiencing homelessness and poverty-related crises are equipped to become self-sufficient and productive.
Last year, Hospitality House provided close to 39,000 nights of shelter and over 150,000 meals men, women and children in need. The most recent Point-in-Time data shows that 43 percent of all homeless families in North Carolina live in the seven-county service area supported by Hospitality House and that 68 percent of the local homeless population are women and children.
