June 24, 2014. On June 27, Horn in the West, the classic outdoor Revolutionary War drama by Kermit Hunter, will once again kick off just as it always has since the show first premiered in 1952. But don’t think for a second that this historical show doesn’t have a few new tricks up its sleeve!
This season marks the first year of the play under the direction of new show director Teresa Lee. Lee is a professor at Appalachian State University, where she joined the Department of Theatre and Dance in 1988.
Lee has been involved with SAHA for more than two decades and started the first summer children’s theatre camp at Horn in the ‘90s. She is following in the footsteps of Julie Richardson, who was director of “Horn in the West” from 2008 to 2013.
For the upcoming season, “Horn in the West” is also tweaking the script. It is using Kermit Hunter’s original 1952 script as a “baseline and springboard” and updating it to appeal to the “aesthetics of a modern audience,” Lee said in a previous article.
Horn in the West is also offering discount tickets on select nights for local High Country residents. On select weekends based on your county of residence, tickets will be discounted to $8 for Watauga residents and $10 for other counties on select dates. The ticketing schedule is as follows:
- June 27-29: Watauga County (opening weekend)
- July 4, 5 & 6: Johnson County, Tenn. and Avery County
- July 11, 12 & 13: Ashe County, Alleghany County and Caldwell County
- July 18, 19 & 20: Wilkes County
- July 25, 26 & 27: Johnson County, Tenn. and Avery County
- Aug. 1, 2 & 3: Ashe County and Caldwell County
- Aug. 8, 9 & 10: Wilkes County
- Aug. 15 & 16: Watauga County (closing weekend)
“We advertise to bring proof of residency to get the discounted tickets,” said Jessi Hall, ticket office manager. “Tickets are still available for the opening weekend too.”
Regular ticket rates are $20 for general reserved admission and $10 for reserved child admission.
The show runs Tuesday through Sunday, at 8 p.m. through Aug 16 at the outdoor amphitheater on Horn in the West Drive with a pre-show at 7:30 featuring period songs sang by the cast. This drama, which premiered in 1952, has delighted audiences of all ages with the story of the Revolutionary War.
