Help Avery County Residents Get Food on Their Tables with Empty Bowls for Avery on Saturday May 17

April 10, 2014. Imagine not being able to run to the store when you’re out of milk, rationing food to last until the next paycheck or choosing between gasoline for your car and food for your table. For too many families in Avery County, that is reality.

Local students and professional potters are busy making handmade ceramic bowls for the biggest food drive in Avery County’s history.

On Saturday, May 17 from 1-3 p.m., Mt. Calvary Baptist Church will host Empty Bowls for Avery, where guests can choose one of more than 100 empty bowls and enjoy homemade soup, bread and dessert – all for whatever donation you wish to make – while learning about the daily struggle facing families in Avery County to put food on the table. The empty bowl is yours to keep as a reminder that there are folks in our community who do, indeed have empty bowls.

Your donation directly benefits Feeding Avery Families, Inc. (FAF), a vital nonprofit organization that provides more than 60 percent of the food assistance in Avery County. While there are some prosperous regions in our state, North Carolina ranks 5th in the nation in overall poverty. In Avery County alone, nearly one child in three doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from.

With your donations, FAF purchases more food from the MANNA food bank than any other agency in Western North Carolina. Food donations are also collected locally from grocery stores, farms, churches and individuals, enabling FAF to distribute food to more than 1,000 individuals every month. The need has increased 316 percent since FAF was formed in 2005 and is still growing.

Empty Bowls is a project of the Imagine/Render Group, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization located in Burnsville and has helped raise tens of millions of dollars for anti-hunger organizations like FAF nationwide.

Feeding Avery Families, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides supplemental food support to the poor of Avery County by any means available.
