June 6, 2014. Well, hello there summertime! As the High Country welcomes the first few weeks of the summer season, High Country Magazine is celebrating with the official release of the brand new June issue!
This month, we welcome back our summer residents with a huge section introducing you to the “12 Dates of Summer.” In this section, we have mapped out 12 dates for the 12 weeks of summertime with something for every taste. Start of your date with a free outdoor concert, check out a festival or two, take a tour of a winery and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We’ve gone ahead and done all of the hard work for you, all you have to do is get out there and do it!
Next up, the Hound Ears Club, located where a former mill town once flourished near Socoe has come a long way since the Robbins brothers first developed it half a century ago. We incite you to learn about the fascinating history of the resort that includes cameos from Paul Harvey, Michel Mantle and Jack Nicklaus.
Then, meet Chancellor Ken Peacock before he steps down from his post. As he enjoys his final days at the university, he reflects on his time at the school that has been his home for more than three decades and recalls trials, triumphs and a whole lot of fun.
Next, check out a gaggle of girls running for a reason. The Girls on the Run 2014 season has just concluded, but not before one hundred girls experienced changes, learning experiences and fun activities that are specially planned to help raise self esteem and create a positive self-image.
From new friendships, we venture to a story of old friends Lisa Stripling and Rob Dyer, owners of The Best Cellar and the Inn at Ragged Gardens and the Blowing Rock Ale House and Inn. Learn about their new venture, Roots, a new restaurant that is now open!
And finally, learn about the Veterans Affairs office in Watauga County and April Pope who took over in 2012. Find out what it takes to assist veterans and their families.
And that’s not all! Be sure to check out our shopping and dining sections to make this summer in the High Country the best one yet. Chances are, if you need it, one of our advertisers has it!
Copies of the magazine are available at your favorite High Country businesses, and if you just can’t wait to get your hands on a copy, check out our online version here.
