Hello, Dolly! is a musical comedy with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart, based on Thornton Wilder‘s The Matchmaker. Dolly Levi, a New York-based matchmaker, who merrily arranges things… like furniture and daffodils and lives, finds herself in love with a “half-a-millionaire” Yonkers merchant named Horace Vandergelder. So she proceeds to weave a web of romantic complications involving him, his two store clerks, a pretty milliner and her assistant. Eventually, of course, all is sorted out, and everyone ends up with the right person.
This Tony Award winning musical opened on Broadway in 1964 with Carol Channing in the starring role. A string of famous female performers of the time took their turn as Dolly, Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey, Phyllis Diller and Ethel Merman. In 1969 Hello Dolly was made into a film directed by Gene Kelly and starred Barbara Streisand and Walter Matthau. A 2017 Broadway revival was recently announced to star Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce.
