Habitat for Humanity, Lowe’s to Host Women Build Event on Grandfather Road May 9

Local Habitat supporters and Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteers will be among more than 15 volunteers to join Watauga County Habitat for Humanity to address the need for affordable housing in the High Country as part of Habitat’s National Women Build Week, May 2-10.

National Women Build Week is a weeklong event created by Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program that challenges women to devote at least one day to help build affordable housing in their local communities. The week also spotlights the homeownership challenges faced by women.1

Lowe’s donated nearly $2 million to this year’s National Women Build Week and each year provides the support of Lowe’s Heroes and conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach volunteers construction skills.

More than 300 Habitat for Humanity affiliates will be hosting Women Build events this year.

A featured local build event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 9 at 361 Grandfather Road off of N.C. Highway 105 South near the Watauga and Avery county line.

About Watauga County Habitat for Humanity

  • Watauga County Habitat for Humanity builds homes in partnership with qualifying partner families and the community. We then sell the homes at no-profit affordable mortgages to partnering families, and we equip our partner families with the knowledge and tools to be successful homeowners.
  • For 25 years, Watauga County Habitat for Humanity has been helping hardworking families achieve their dream of homeownership. We have built more than 25 homes, helped transform our community and given our families hope.
  • The average cost to build a Habitat home in Watauga County is $100,000. The current payment on a Habitat mortgage – including taxes, insurance and homeowner association fees – is $450.
  • As rent continues to rise, Watauga Habitat offers families the stability of a home of their own with predictable payments to help them achieve not only the dream of homeownership, but the other dreams they have for themselves and their families. Homeownership improves educational outcomes and health. It offers the opportunity to be a part of a neighborhood and a community and it gives them a chance to build their savings and a financially secure future. We are there for them every step of the way to make sure they’re ready to buy and have the support they need to keep it.
  • We have two approved families and this campaign will help raise the capital needed to begin construction in April for the first of those two homes.
  • Habitat for Humanity International mission: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.
  • HFHI vision: A world where everyone has a decent place to live.

How It Works

Watauga Habitat partners with families to be successful homeowners by training them to pay for their homes, maintain their homes and connect with their community. We require our families to take our homebuyer education classes on topics ranging from finance and budgeting to home repair and maintenance. Additionally, Watauga Habitat provides family mentors who meet regularly with Habitat families to guide them through the home buying process. We build high quality and energy efficient homes. Home styles may vary in each of our neighborhoods, and the size of your home is determined by the size of your family.
