The public is invited to a ground breaking ceremony recognizing and thanking Elaine J. Wold and family and marking the revitalization of the Historic Banner Elk School property. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2:00 pm, adjacent to the elk on the Town Green.
Mayor Brenda Lyerly will welcome Mrs. Elaine Wold, whose generous Naming Rights donation will fund the beautification of the school’s garden area along Highway 184. In 2002 the late Dr. and Mrs. Keith Wold donated the sculpture of the elk that enhances the sidewalk in front of the school. The elk, which honors the Wold family, will be a featured element of the new design. Mayor Lyerly and Town Manager Rick Owen will present a rendering of the plans for the landscaping and enhancements of the new Town Green.
The Town Green is well known as the home of the Woolly Worm Festival. It is also the venue for Art on the Greene, the town-sponsored arts and crafts festival series and the Avery County Farmers’ Market which is on Thursdays from 4:30 to 7 p.m. throughout the summer and fall.
