For Fifth Year in a Row, Blowing Rock Community Foundation Presents Groovy Nights Fundraiser

by Becky Petchenik

Aug. 5, 2013 The Blowing Rock Community Foundation is rolling out the red carpet for an extravaganza of music and entertainment at the annual Groovy Nights fundraiser.

The event is scheduled for Aug 11 at 6 p.m, and Aug. 13 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Blowing Rock Country Club. To make reservations, call Blowing Rock Country Club at 828-295-3171.  Checks made payable to Blowing Rock Community Foundation with a memo of the name of the guest and night of the performance can also be sent to Blowing Rock Community Foundation, P.O. Box 525 Blowing Rock, NC 28605.  For more information visit the Community Foundation’s homepage or the event’s Facebook page.  Like the page and be entered to win a pair of free tickets to the event.

For five years running, the Blowing Rock Country Club has hosted the event, so the Foundation is celebrating with dance routines, new acts and returning favorites.  A tax deductible $25 donation per person is required to attend.  All proceeds will benefit nonprofit organizations like Oasis and scholarships for the town of Blowing Rock.  There will be refreshments and a cash bar, and it is recommended that attendees arrive at the Country Club before the show.

The show has many surprises in store for the attendees, as well as some fan favorites that guests of previous Groovy Nights will recognize.  Blowing Rock’s first lady Lynn Lawrence, her son Justin Lawrence and town councilmen Doug Matheson and Jim Steele will be performing a music number that will be kept under wraps until the performance date.

“It’s going to be a big surprise,” said event coordinator Wendy Estes. “Everyone’s going to love it.”

Blowing Rock  Chief of Police Eric Brown, Blowing Rock Department of Tourism Executive Director Tracy Brown, Blowing Rock Parks and Recreation Maintenance Technician Tom Shelly and Blowing Rock Fire Department volunteer Rob Slack will be performing YMCA by the Village People.  Glen Dhing will be returning to perform Tina Turner songs.

“People love her,” said Ms. Estes.

In total, over 54 performers will take the stage each night.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to help the Blowing Rock community, and I encourage everyone to be there,” said Ms. Estes.
