The man suspected of robbing the First Citizens Bank in Granite Falls in early October turned himself in on Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

WBTV reported that law enforcement received tips from the community that Dewey Gentry Jr., 32, of Granite Falls was identified as the man in the surveillance photos during the robbery, where he “never showed a weapon or indicated he had one” to the teller, according to WBTV reporter Steve Ohnesorge.

“Gentry’s girlfriend told WBTV that he has medical issues and is unable to work. She said the bills were piling up and this happened in an effort to get the bills paid. She said the couple’s water and gas had been cut off due to the piling debt,” WBTV reported.

“She said Gentry is a good man and did the wrong thing.”

Gentry was charged with common law robbery and is expected to first appear in the Caldwell County District Court tomorrow.
