Good Vibes Jazz Trio and The King Bees both perform from the Jones House porch on Friday, June 30, starting at 5:00 p.m., continuing the 2017 Summer Concerts at the Jones House series.
The Good Jazz Vibes Trio will start the evening. The group was born out of a desire to create a jazz combo with instrumentation you might not hear every day. Rob Falvo, percussion professor at Appalachian State University, invited his colleague Lauren Hayworth to try some jazz standards with vibraphone and vocals. They soon invited professional bassist Kim France to add low end and a second layer of vocals, Lauren started trying out miscellaneous percussion from Rob’s studio, and the experiment became a band. Rob, Kim, and Lauren are all considered crossover artists – at home in both the classical and jazz worlds – and these perspectives inform their approach to the jazz standards we all know and love.
“The audience can expect to hear swing tunes, bossa nova standards, and torch songs with a smooth twist and a unique ‘vibe’ if you will,” says Hayworth.
The King Bees will follow, featuring the blues guitar work of Rob Baskerville and bass playing and singing of Penny Zamagni. The King Bees have fueled the High Country blues seen for decades, performing throughout the area, promoting regional blues legends, and founding and running the New River Blues Festival.
“The King Bees have been the heart and soul of High Country blues for a long time, and it is always a great time having them at the Jones House,” says concert organizer, Mark Freed.
