Girl Scouts Carolina Peaks to Piedmont Brings Girl Scout Cookies to the High Country This Week!

By Madison Fisler Lewis

Jan. 14, 2015. Thin mints, Do-Si-Dos, and Peanut Butter Patties will once again grace the palates of High Country cookie lovers starting next week. That”s right, Girl Scout Cookies are on their way, and there are many places around the area to get your sugar fix!

The Girl Scouts of the USA have been selling cookies as part of their skill building program since 1915, and will celebrate 100 years of serving communities through delicious cookie sales this year.

The girls will receive their shipment of cookies this week, and next week will begin selling cookies door to door in their communities.

“There was a change in the program last year,” said Lisa Crawford of Girl Scouts Peaks to Piedmont. “The approach is a little bit different now. Girls can start taking orders for cookies on Jan. 1 online where they send out messages to friends or go door to door. Now that the cookies arrive earlier, a lot of girls wait to go door to door until they go with cookies in hand so the girls can take orders and deliver the cookies all in one trip. We call that week “Walkabout Week” where they can sell door to door in their communities. Girl scout cookies are best served face to face and our girls know that.”

After the Walkabout Week, the local cookie booths will start popping up around the community. This year, the cookie booths will start selling cookies on Jan. 23. Locations where cookies can be purchased include the following locations:

Boone

  • Boone Mall
  • Lowe”s Home Improvement
  • Harris Teeter
  • Lowe”s Foods
  • Mast General Store
  • Pet Supply Plus

Blowing Rock

  • Blowing Rock Realty

Banner Elk

  • Lowe”s Foods

Lenoir

  • Wal-Mart
  • Belk
  • Lowe”s Home Improvement
  • Tractor Supply

Newland

  • Lowe”s Foods

“The girls use this as a program where they learn these skills and we really want them to have that opportunity,” Crawford said. “Our cookie bakers have shown that considering that Girl Scout Cookies are only sold a limited six weeks out of the year, they are still one of the top cookie sellers in the entire calendar year! We realize that most of our customers would love it if they were available year round, but we think it is important to remember that this is a program for the girls.”

This year, the cookies will be arriving two weeks sooner than usual. In the past, cookies have traditionally become available on Super Bowl Weekend.

To find the cookie locations closest to you, click here or download the mobile app for iPhone and Android.

“It”s an app that consumers can download on their phones that gives the most accurate and up to date information,” Crawford said. “Troop leaders will be entering more dates as they confirm additional booth locations. Customers can type in their zip codes and find the cookie booths closest to them.”

Girl Scouts is proudly participating in a project aiming to collect 26,000 boxes of cookies and 1,000 letters of encouragement to send in care packages to be shipped to U.S. Military personnel serving both in the U.S and overseas. To support this project customers can purchase any box of cookies locally at the price of $4, or purchase a case of 12 boxes by calling 800-274-8491.
