By Jessica Isaacs | jessica@highcountrypress.com

The folks at the Blowing Rock Community Foundation sure know how to have a good time, and you’re invited to join the party at the eighth annual Groovy Nights series of lip sync performances. Tickets are selling fast for the remaining two performances, so call and get yours now!

The three-night lineup began on Sunday, Sept. 18 and show times continue on Tuesday, Sept. 20 and Friday, Sept. 23.

Every year, local folks sport costumes inspired by their favorite celebrity musical acts and take to the stage for fun, spirited and laughable performances that never disappoint, and it’s all for a good cause.

“We raise money, and we hope to raise enough money, in all of our events to fund scholarships and grants for all of the nonprofits in Blowing Rock,” said Sandy Miller, chairperson of the foundation. “This year, we will be awarding over $90,000 a year in scholarships and somewhere around $40-$50,000 in grants.”

The Groovy Nights series wraps up the foundation’s annual Community Days, which offer up a variety of opportunities for High Country residents to get involved in fundraising to support local scholarships and grants for nonprofit organizations.

This year’s Community Days began in June and featured a locally sourced dinner at Bistro Roca and a full day of friendly competition at the annual Game Day, as well as tennis and golf tournaments at Blowing Rock Country Club and a related awards cocktail party.

“We have done very well with Groovy Nights. People just love to come out and see their friends in a lip syncing show,” Miller said. “It’s lots of fun and it makes people laugh and we’ve been very lucky and successful with it and it’s a great way to close out Community Days.”

A tax deductible $35 donation will get you into the show this year. Performances will begin at 7 p.m. on Sunday and at 7:30 p.m. on the following Tuesday and Friday, at the Blowing Rock Country Club each night.

Miller extends special thanks to show directors Kim Hartley and Jean Wilkinson, as well as to Karen Curlin, who brought the idea for Groovy Nights to the foundation eight years ago.
