Sept. 29, 2014. Appalachian State University’s Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series will continue with George Ella Lyons, The Rachel Rivers-Coffey Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing.
On Thursday, Oct. 2, a reception for the widely-published writer will be held in the Price Lake Room at Plemmons Student Union starting at 6 p.m. A reading will take place following the reception at 7:30 p.m. in the Table Rock Room of the Plemmons Student Union.
George Ella Lyons is published widely in multiple genres, including picture books, young adult novels, novels and poetry. She has won several awards including a Golden Kite Award from the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators for Borrowed Children in 1989 and the Lamont Hall Award and Andrew Mountain Press Award in 1983 for her book of poetry, Mountain.
Born in Kentucky, she holds a B.A. from Centre College, and M.A. from the University of Arkansas and a PhD from the University of Indiana. She has served as an executive committee member for the Women Writers Conference in Kentucky. She currently teachers writing through conferences, workshops and author visits.
The Visiting Writers Series is named in honor of Hughlene Bostian Frank (class of 1968), 2013 Appalachian Alumni Association Outstanding Service Award recipient, past trustee and generous supporter of Appalachian State University.
