Several gas stations in the High Country are selling gas at under $2 per gallon.

This is likely the first time prices have dipped below $2 per gallon in and around Boone since the beginning of the Great Recession in late 2008 and early 2009, according to GasBuddy.com charts.

Another gas tracking website, NorthCarolinaGasPrices.com notes that Carolina Petro near University Hall Drive in Boone, Marathon near Longvue Drive in Boone, Speedway near Meadowview Drive in Boone and the Exxon on at the intersection of Blowing Rock Road and N.C. 105 are all under $2 per gallon.

Banner Elk stations in Avery County are also selling gas below $2.

Historically, Ashe County features lower gas prices than Watauga County. In West Jefferson, several gas stations are selling gas below the $1.80 mark.

According to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report, one gallon of gas in North Carolina is averaging about $1.99. This compares to the national average of regular gas that hovers just above $2 per gallon at $2.02.
