In the past few days gas prices in the High Country jumped about 10 cents, continuing a slow and steady trend upward since dipping to nearly $2 per gallon in January.
In late January, prices around the Boone area reached as low as $2.09. With a nearly 40-cent increase in the past couple of months, drivers are paying nearly $5 more to fill up their 12-gallon tank or about $7 more to fill up their 18-gallon tank at the pump than they did in January.
According to AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report, the national average is $2. 42 on Thursday. No states are averaging under $2 per gallon anymore. Earlier this year, more than half of the states were under that mark.
Currently, North Carolina is average $2.30 per gallon, which ranks 19th lowest in the country.
While the uptick in prices will be felt, the current prices are still well below the highest price in recent memory that occurred during Memorial Day Weekend in 2014, when gas was more than $3.70 per gallon.
