From the Desk of Avery County Schools Supt. David Burleson: Teacher Appreciation Week

To The Editor,

Supt. Burleson
Supt. Burleson

As we look back on Teacher Apprecaition Week, I want to personally thank each of our Avery County School’s educators for the great job they do and for making a difference is the lives of children. To be called an educator is the most significant calling that anyone can have. An educator makes a difference in the life of a child. Our vocation is one of the most important in the world because the future is shaped everyday in the classrooms of our schools.

I want to commend our staff for their hard work, their dedication, and their willingness to understand the seriousness of the work they do every day. The children who walk into the classrooms of our schools each and every day are our most precious resource and the future of our whole country depends on them. Personally, I feel that our young people in Avery County are in wonderful, caring hands because of the people we have in the Avery County Schools. What is done for each child matters. Thanks to each of you for caring enough to make a difference in the life of a child.

In our society many times the wrong individuals are considered to be our country’s hero’s. We see a great athlete go out and score points or make an outstanding athletic play and people consider them to be a hero. We also turn on the T.V. or pick up magazines and see actors and actresses classified as stars. Many times we also hear individuals making great discoveries or writing wonderful pieces of literature and we consider those as our most outstanding citizens. But we must stop and ask the question, “How did they get to be where they are?” The answer is very simple. It’s because of the true heroes of this world and that is our educators and parents. Without educators and parents not a single one of the people mentioned above would be where they are today.

As we come to the end of another exciting school year, the Avery County Schools are asking our parents for their feedback on our Excellent Schools Survey. In order to receive valuable information concerning our school system we feel that it is critical to hear from our parents and community. It is our belief that our parents are one of our most important resources. We are asking that our parents take just a few minutes of their time to fill out the parent survey before Monday, June 1.   The electronic link to this survey can be found on the Avery County Schools’ website: www.averyschools.net . A paper survey, along with instructions, will also be sent home with all students. If a parent has children in more than one school, they are to complete a survey for each of the schools. Our middle and high school students will be completing a survey during homeroom over the next couple of weeks.

My hope and prayer is that our staff can look back over the course of the year and see how special they have been to a child. As educators we have the wonderful opportunity to recognize the impact we make in a child’s life and the contribution we make to their well-being. Thanks again to each of our staff and community for making the Avery County Schools a special place for our students.

Sincerely yours,

David Burleson
