From the Desk of ACS Supt. David Burleson: Back To School Bash Event Helps Families

By ACS Supt. David Burleson

I hope you are having a great summer and enjoying many opportunities to spend time with family. As the summer begins to wind down, The Avery County Schools are working hard to prepare for a new school year. As we prepare for another year, it is our desire to meet the needs of all our students. In order to do that, we need the help of our entire community.

Supt. Burleson
Supt. Burleson

We believe our families and communities are essential to our mission to meet the needs of the diverse group of students we serve. It is our hope you would be willing to support our children in any way possible.  One major way to support our children is through the second annual Back to School Bash.

The Avery County Schools, along with Land Harbor of Linville and other community supporters are sponsoring the Back to School Bash for our families. This event brings together community partners to offer FREE school supplies and information vital for a safe, successful school year. Currently, more than 60 percent of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch and 33.9 percent of our children less than 18 years of age live below the federal poverty line. These numbers indicate the imperative need to join together to assist families as they begin the 2015 school year.

The Back to School Bash will feature law enforcement, fire/safety demonstrations, required forms to complete, free/reduced lunch applications, school registration packets, information about student health and insurance, various activities, FREE haircuts, clothing, backpacks, school supplies and food! The day once again promises back-to-school assistance for families, as well as a time to celebrate the start of another new school year.

We know by the actions of our community that Avery County supports the students we serve. Through our Back to School Bash we can work diligently together to ensure that each student has the necessary tools to manage their school day. As you have witnessed, much can be accomplished when we work together. Will you join us as we help our families get off to a great school year?

We are asking everyone in our community to consider making a monetary donation to assist us in buying needed school supplies to fill backpacks for our students or volunteer at the Back to School Bash. Those tax deductible donations can be mailed directly to the Avery County Schools at 775 Cranberry Street, Newland NC, 28657. We also ask that you help us spread the word for our Back to School Bash from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015.

I want to personally thank you for supporting all of our students and school system.

Sincerely yours,

ACS Supt. David Burleson, davidburleson@averyschools.net
