Friends of the Watauga County Library are hosting a “Holiday Book Sale” next week at the Boone Mall. The sale begins Tuesday, Nov. 6 from 4 to 9 p.m. It continues Wednesday, Nov. 7 and Thursday, Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and ends Friday, Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
On Tuesday, the sale opens at 4 p.m. for anyone who is a Friend of the library; those who are Friends of the library get first choice. It costs $5 for adults to join and $2 for children to join; these memberships are designed to encourage members of the community to buy books and enjoy reading while helping fund library programs.
The sale offers a large selection of books—over 1,000—that will cater to all types of audiences. The different books will be organized by genre and displayed via tables, which will be spread in rows throughout the center of the mall.
The large selection can be attributed to the generosity of the Watauga community.
“Volunteers come in at least twice a week,” Joan Hearn, one of the many volunteers of the Friends of the library, said. “People here are absolutely incredible.”
All books are in pristine condition that have been kept in storage for events such as the the Holiday Book Sale. However, when it comes to children’s books, the more used, the better.
“Parents say that’s the ones they want because they have been loved,” Hearn said.
In addition to books, there will also be gift baskets available for purchase. The gift baskets are already wrapped and ready to go, including a book and corresponding articles that reflect the book and age group. Some also include items like coffee mugs. Prices vary by size, which ranges from small to large baskets.
The Holiday Book Sale is one of the library’s biggest fundraisers, helping to fund the enriching programs offered by the Watauga County Library, such as “Boone Boo.” There are also in-house books sales that continually occur throughout the year at the library.
