This Friday Join the Songwriters Showcase at Jones House featuring Jon Shain among other songwriters

The Summer Concerts at the Jones House features a variety of musical styles, highlighting some of the best High Country and regional musicians, and this Friday will focus on North Carolina-based songwriters.  The show will include sets of original songs by Jon Shain, Angela Easterling, and Earleine.

Singer-songwriter Jon Shain makes his home in the Raleigh-Durham area, where he has gained a reputation for his skillful guitar playing.  Shain combines elements from Piedmont blues, bluegrass, swing, and ragtime to create a rhythmic and powerful backdrop for his singing.

Shain grew up in a Massachusetts mill town, where his family ran a textile dyeing company.  He made connections to songs about regular working people and themes of social justice.  Shain moved to North Carolina in 1986 to study history at Duke, while also expanding his playing skills with jazz lessons.  He also got to play with Big Boy Henry and John Dee Holeman, helping hone his Piedmont finger-style guitar skills.  Shain helped found the band Flyin’ Mice, which toured around the country in the 1990s playing folk-rock.  Since then, Shain has mostly focused on songwriting, including collaborations with other great NC writers and musicians, like Joe Newberry.

Shain will start the performance at 5:00 p.m., followed by Americana singer-songwriter, Angela Easterling.  Easterling has been writing, singing, and grabbing the attention of music fans in the Carolinas for the past decade.  She performs and records with her partner and multi-instrumentalist, Brandon Turner, combining to create a country sound with a Carolina roots music twist.  With her fifth album due next month, Easterling is gearing up for a busy year.

Easterling has been recognized in several roots music circles, including being selected for an official Americana Convention Showcase and a three-time Kerrville New Folk Finalist, a Telluride Troubadour, and a two-time Wildflower Performing Songwriter Finalist.  Easterling has been featured on numerous regional radio stations, as well as national radio programs – such as being interviewed by NPR’s Bob Edwards.  Over the years, she has appeared on stage with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Sara Jarosz, Lucinda Williams, Charlie Louvin, Ray Price, and many more.

Rounding out the songwriter showcase, Boone-based guitar player and singer, Earleine, will give the final performance of the evening.  Born in Clarksville, Tennessee, just 40 miles outside of Nashville, Earleine grew up immersed in musical culture.  At 18, she picked up the guitar, and she soon began writing songs of her own.  Earleine made her way tot he mountains in the winter of 2016 to expand her musical horizons.  Genuine and shockingly honest, her songwriting is mixed with poetic lyricism and dreamy harmonies that seem to lift hard time memories into ephemeral realms.  Earleine’s style blends folk, rock, blues, and roots music in a soulful way.
