Feb. 17, 2014. On Feb. 20, Appalachian State University will host the 16th annual Polar Plunge at Duck Pond. Participants will be dressed in wacky costumes, jumping in large groups and freezing for a great cause.
Sponsored by Watauga County law enforcement agencies and the Watauga County Parks and Recreation Department, more than 100 individuals are expected to make the chilly leap into the ice-cold water to help raise funds for Special Olympics athletes in Watauga County.
Last year, 142 participants jumped into 38-degree water to raise $6,881 for the cause, and since its inception the Polar Plunge has managed to raise more than $100,000, according to a press release.
This year, registration will be held at Duck Pond Field off of Rivers Street on Appalachian State University’s campus. Registration fees are $25 per person or $20 per person in groups of five or more. The plunge will begin immediately following registration.
And this isn’t just a fundraiser it’s a competition! Prizes will be awarded for the most extreme costume and to the top fundraising group or individual. All plungers will receive a Polar Plunge towel to dry off and warm up after jumping into the water.
Duck Pond Field is located off of Rivers Street and Stadium Drive on ASU’s campus.
