Foxx: Honoring Sacrifices for Cause of Freedom

By U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx

As a country, we are uniquely blessed. We live in a nation where each one of us has the opportunity for nearly limitless fulfillment and prosperity in the world’s finest democracy. That freedom and opportunity has been made available to us because of the sacrifices of those who have fought for and defended America.

On this Memorial Day, we ought to remember in particular those who made the ultimate sacrifice and through that sacrifice blessed us with liberty and unparalleled possibilities. Unfortunately, many sometimes forget the true meaning of this important day. For them, it is simply another day off work or an excuse to check out sales at the mall.

As we celebrate with barbeques, beach trips and parades, it’s important to realize that many across the globe do not have the same freedoms we enjoy. There is overt religious persecution in the Middle East and political oppression in Russia, China and other regions. We should be continually grateful for those who laid down their lives in defense of democracy.

While we cannot repay the debt we owe to those fallen heroes, we can ensure that we take the necessary steps to care for our surviving veterans. That is why I am joining with a number of veterans service organizations to hold a Veterans Information Session on Friday, June 19, in Clemmons. It is always an honor to assist veterans from the 5th District, and I want to make sure those in our community know about the benefits they qualify for and have an opportunity to provide feedback on the issues they face.

Let us also remember those who currently serve in our Armed Forces and their loved ones here at home who are anxious for their safe return. Our troops do not risk for their own gain. They do so for others – for their comrades, for their families and for their country. Liberty is bought and paid for by the incomprehensible generosity of these patriots.

The conflicts we face today are unlike any the world has seen before, and they require us to be ever more mindful of the challenges our military personnel face each day. It is our responsibility as citizens to do all that we can to ensure these brave men and women return home.

As we observe this Memorial Day, I urge you to join me in taking time to pause, reflect and honor the sacrifices of those who have given their lives in the pursuit of a more prosperous and free America. May we endeavor to live worthy of their legacy and guard, vigilantly, the history and stories of our fallen.
