Jan. 18, 2013. On Thursday, Jan. 17, Scott Harvey Wheeler was arrested by the Boone Police Department for two counts of felony embezzlement.

Wheeler is a former manager of Black Bear Books and is alleged to have used funds belonging to the business for his own personal use.

He was employed with Black Bear Books from 2009 to the beginning of January 2013, according to Kat Breckenridge, a detective with the Boone Police Department.

“The investigation just started and is ongoing as of right now,” Breckenridge said. “Just two charges right now and more potentially to come.”

She said the owners of Black Bear Books asked Wheeler about the financial status of the business and from there found some discrepancies in the company’s bank accounts.

She said the total amount missing is undetermined as of right now and accountants with law enforcement are perusing financial statements and bank accounts for more details to try to determine the actual amount of money missing.

She said the two initial charges are for small amounts– one is for $200 and the other is for $50, but she stressed that more could potentially come.

“You have to think, over the course of three years, what that total figure might look like,” Breckenridge said.

Wheeler was taken before a Watauga County Magistrate, where he was issued a $15,000 secured bond and a court date of Feb. 26.
