Former Ashe County Deputy Indicted for Last Summer’s Shooting Death of Dallas Shatley

By Jesse Wood

A former Ashe County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been indicted in the July 2015 shooting death of 62-year-old Dallas Shatley, according to a report in the Jefferson Post, which noted that the charges were announced in open court today in Jefferson.

“Former ACSO Deputy Joshua Hopkins was charged with second degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon intent to kill inflicting serious bodily injury,” according to the Jefferson Post. “That news comes from Ashe County Sheriff James Williams and Davidson County District Attorney Garry Frank who is handling the investigation.”

Shatley was shot after officers responded to a call of a disturbance in Crumpler. At the time of his death, officers said Shatley was shot after he jumped in his car when deputies arrived and drove away, dragging an officer with him.

Body cameras worn by all three deputies recorded the entire incident.

Hopkins was “Hoppy” in the reality TV show Southern Justice.
