Forget-Me-Nots Member Maura Shawn Scanlin Wins US National Scottish Fiddle Competition in Pennsylvania

Sept. 17, 2012. Maura Shawn Scanlin, of Vilas, recently won the 2012 US National Scottish Fiddle Competition which was held in Edinboro, Penn. Competitors from throughout the U.S. gathered on the campus of Edinboro University to compete for the title. Maura Shawn has also won awards at this competition in 2008, 2010 and 2011. 

Maura Shawn has been playing violin since she was three years old, beginning her studies with Nan Stricklen of Banner Elk. She later studied with Dr. Nancy Bargerstock at the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University.

Maura Shawn is currently a high school senior at the University of North Carolina’s School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. where she studies violin with Ms. Sarah Johnson and plays in various chamber groups and the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra. 

Maura Shawn’s Scottish influences have included Dr. John Turner, Bonnie Rideout, Jamie Laval, Jerry Holland, Jeremy Kittle, Alasdair Fraser and Natalie MacMaster. She is also a member of the Forget-Me-Nots, a local celtic band.
