Flood Watch for Ashe, Avery, Watauga Counties: Significant River Rises Expected Through Next 24 Hours

Jan. 15, 2012. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the High Country as excessive rainfall is expected throughout today and tonight.

According to the alert, upwards of three inches has already fallen along the Blue Ridge Mountains, and an additional two to three inches is likely throughout Wednesday morning. 

“Tuesday morning area streams were rising, many of which were half bank full. These streams will continue to rise today and may begin to flood this afternoon or tonight,” the alert read. “Significant rises are also expected on area rivers over the next 24 hours.”

The NWS’s forecasting office at Blacksburg, Va., advised residents living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action if flooding should happen.
