April 29, 2014. Keep your umbrella handy.

After the wet thumping in the middle of the night and multiple rounds of thunderstorms forecasted in the near future, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch this morning that is in effect through 12 a.m. on Thursday, May 1.

RaysWeather.com noted that a half inch to an inch of rain fell during the middle of the night, and more than an inch of rain fell in communities around the High Country on Monday and so far Tuesday morning.

“There is plenty more where that came from until late Wednesday night.Expect rounds of showers and thundershowers today with a few breaks in the action. More intense storms and heavy rain return this evening and tonight with strong wind and small hail. Wash, rinse, and repeat Wednesday,” RaysWeather.com notes in its forecast discussion Tuesday.

The flash flood watch concerns Northwestern North Carolina and portions of Virginia and Southeast West Virginia. Through Wednesday evening, the National Weather Services forecasts that “two to three more inches [of rain] will be common – with local amounts of four inches or more possible, especially near the Blue Ridge.”
