May 7, 2013. The High Country isn’t out of the flooded woods just yet.
North Carolina counties affected include Alleghany, Ashe, Surry, Watauga and Wilkes.
Combined with the current saturation, a slow moving showers and thunderstorms are developing across the mountains that have the potential to produce heavy rains and convert rainfall directly into runoff, according to the alert from the National Weather Service.

As for Avery County, the NWS released a Special Weather Statement alerting of a strong thunderstorm that should affect Avery County until 3:30 p.m.
Small hail, wind gusts up to 40 mph and torrential rain are expected with this storm that could cause scattered trees and power lines to fall.
