Flash Flood and Tornado Watches in Effect Until Monday Evening for Watauga County

The National Weather Service has issued watches for flash flooding and tornadoes in Watauga County and beyond.

The tornado watch is in effect for 34 counties in primarily Western North Carolina. These include Avery, Ashe, Burke, Caldwell, Wilkes and Watauga Counties. The tornado watch also extends into Georgia and South Carolina. The tornado watch is in effect until 9 p.m.

According to info from the Blacksburg, Va. office with the National Weather Service, possible threats include:

  • A few tornadoes
  • Isolated hail up to small marble size
  • Scattered gusts up to 70 mph

The aftermath of Hurricane Nate brought tornadoes in Wilkes, Ashe, Caldwell and Burke counties a couple weeks ago, according to N.C. Emergency Management. 

As for the flash flood watch, that is in effect until 8 p.m. The flash flood watch concerns portions of northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia, including Alleghany, Ashe and Watauga counties in North Carolina and Carroll and Grayson counties in Virginia.

The watch noted that 1 to 2 inches of rain has already fallen and another 2 to 3 inches is expected to fall by 8 p.m.
