Dec. 18, 2012. Flags around the High Country and across the nation are still flying at half-staff following the the tragic massacre of 26 people, including 20 children ages six and seven, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. last Friday.

On Saturday, Gov. Bev Perdue ordered flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the shooting. It was the worst school shooting at a primary school in United States history, and is second only to the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007 in terms of the number of victims among all school shootings.
