First Friday Art Crawl: Downtown Boone Comes Alive With the August Edition of This Evening Tradition

July 31, 2014. On Friday, Aug. 1, downtown Boone will be taken over by the First Friday Art Crawl. Like always, this month’s crawl will feature food, drinks and live music with work and exhibitions from local artists. And as usual, everyone is invited to come out and enjoy some Friday night fun. If you’ve never experienced First Friday Art Crawl, here is your chance to get in on what the locals already know! Head on down to downtown Boone and enjoy a Friday night out on the town. Here’s what is happening this month. 

Where to Go:

Jones House Community Center
Amantha Mill and the Jazz Guitar Duo will perform at the Jones House Cultural and Community Center on Friday starting at 5 p.m. for a free concert to bring live music to the “First Friday” festivities in downtown Boone. For more information about the series please visit www.JonesHouseCommunityCenter.org or call 828-268-6280.

The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts
The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is located at 423 West King St. in Boone. On Friday, Aug. 1, guests will be able to view a plethora of exhibitions. Exhibitions for this month’s Art Crawl include Ivan Fortushniak: In Christ Alone; Legacy, Tradition, Reinvention by Penland Resident Artists; the 28th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition; TWENTY: Contemporary Art from South Africa and South African History Under Apartheid: A Tribute to Nelson Mandela. Admission for the event is free and the public is invited to attend. For more information, please call 828-262-3017. 

Art of Oil

Art of Oil, located at 819 W. King Street, will offer tastings of delicious, gourmet olive oils and balsamic vinegars. The tastings will be paired with complementing wines. Live music for the event will be provided by Cody Mitchell. 

Art Walk
Located at 611 West King Street, Art Walk will artist Debi Dwyer, whose stained glass artwork features whimsical themes like butterflies and fairies. Alongside the artwork, Art Walk will offer wine and refreshments to guests. For more information, contact Art Walk at 264-9998.  

Lucky Penny
Lucky Penny will be open from 6-9 for Art Crawl and will feature Lu-Lu’s Links, upcycled jewelry designs with a unique twist. Each piece is one of a kind and handmade and includes at least one vintage or up-cycled element. 

Dancing Moon Bookstore
Dancing Moon Bookstore, located at 553 W. King St. will feature fabric artist Berkeley Brown. Refreshments will be served to guests. 

Doe Ridge Pottery
Doe Ridge Pottery, located at 585 West King Street will host an open studio this week where artists can visit and create their own pieces. Doe Ridge will provide the materials with prices organized per pound with an extra evening fee. For more information, contact Doe Ridge Pottery at 828-264-1127.

Old World Galleries
Old World Galleries, located at 697 W. King St will feature artists Wes Waugh, Jane Miller and Gaines Kiker along with their beautiful selection of fine and estate jewelry. Wine will be served to guests featuring local wines from Grandfather Vineyard. For more information, contact Old World Galleries at 828-264-6559.

Anna Banana’s
Located at 641 West King Street, Anna Banana’s will offer refreshments from Char and Glug As always, customers can dance for a 10-percent discount on merchandise! Claire Bilbao will offer face painting and Henna tattoos will be offered by Maria Perry. For more information, call 828-865-2000. 

Located at 179 Howard St.
Char will celebrate Art Crawl with a buy one get one special and a wine special as well. Char will be open until 2 a.m. with the restaurant closing at 10 p.m. Friday evening. For more information, call 828-266-2179.
