Fire Marshal to Residents: Use Caution While Open Burning Over Next Several Days

Fire officials in Watauga County are urging residents to use caution while open burning over the next several days. With low humidity and high wind gusts, this weather allows for a fire to quickly spread out of control. Although a burning ban is not currently in place, fire officials encourage open burning to be delayed until weather conditions improve.

During open burning, remember to:

  • Burn only approved materials which consist of natural vegetation. No construction materials or lumber is allowed to be burned.
  • Obtain a burning permit before conducting open burning.
  • Always stay with the fire, never leave it unattended.
  • If you realize the fire is spreading out of control immediately dial 911.
