Final Two Days To Take Feinstein Challenge, Join Hospitality House In Fight To End Hunger Locally

April 29 2013. It’s the final two days to take the Feinstein Challenge and join Hospitality House in their bid to end hunger in the High Country. Hospitality House has partnered with the Feinstein Foundation, who will divide $1 million among hunger-fighting organizations across America, to fight hunger in the High Country. At the conclusion of the Challenge, Hospitality House will receive a partial match grant from the Feinstein Foundation based on the amount of funds & food raised between March 1 & April 30, 2013.

Hospitality HouseA record number of individuals, schools, businesses and churches have taken the Feinstein Challenge – raising almost $60,000 and donating over 10,00 food items so far. Community events like the High Country Wedding Expo ($816 + 612 food items), campus events like the Appalachian Hunger Games (1472 food items), churches like St. Mary’s of the Hills (450 food items) and schools like WHS Key Club (80 items) have all contributed to the success of this year’s challenge.

“The community has really gotten into the challenge”, Hospitality House Food Service Coordinator Allison Jennings said last week. “We’ve had groups coming by daily to donate and with over 8600 food items already collected, we’ve exceeded what we did last year but we really want to reach the 10,000 mark!”

In these final days Hospitality House is reminding folks that food and funds, including pledges, count toward the final tally. “A great way to make a difference is to join our 500 Club and give $32 per month, says director of development Todd Carter.  “As a pledge, that contribution will count as $384 toward the Feinstein Challenge and will have extra money added to it by the Feinstein Foundation.”

On Monday, April 29, Carter said he was “blown away” with the recent outpouring of support from the community in the final week of the challenge. He noted that members of Rutherwood Baptist Church dropped food off this morning and that ASU’s Greek Life, a campus organization for all the fraternities and sororities, dropped off 1,000 items last week and plan to bring 2,000 more items by Tuesday. He also said that Relay for Life of Watauga County also brought in hundreds of food items.

“We are really cooking this week,” Carter said. “I’ve been completely blown away.”
