Final Numbers From the High Country Breast Cancer Foundation’s Inaugural Walk/Run for Breast Cancer

Irene Sawyer, Broker and breast-cancer survivor,  announced today that the foundation she began, the High Country Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.,  far exceeded its participation and  financial goals at last Saturday’s Inaugural Walk/Run for Breast Cancer in Blowing Rock.  There were over 352 registered walkers/runners.   Donations exceeded $28,500.  100% of the gross receipts remain in the High Country to help local breast cancer patients.

Barbara Dean, a physician assistant at Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center in Boone, participated in the walk/run and shared why she supports the cause.  “This is very dear to me,” Dean said.  “I wanted to honor our patients who are going through their fight right now, those who have passed, and those who don’t even know they’ve been diagnosed yet.”

Elayne Bishop, a recent breast cancer survivor, teacher at Watauga High School and HCBCF board member, shared her experience with breast cancer. “I was diagnosed last year when I was 15 weeks pregnant, eight days after I lost my sister to triple negative breast cancer,”  Bishop said.  Bishop expressed that the walk/run is special to her because of her experience and the support that HCBCF and the community provide.
