A fatal single-vehicle wreck occurred in the 1500 block of Poplar Grove Road at about 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, according to the State Highway Patrol.
Traveling south on Poplar Grove Road in a blue, 2004 Hyundai, Juliana Groce, 22, entered a left-hand curve too fast and ran off the road, striking a guardrail and then a large tree.
The passenger, Warrick Louis Fister, 20, of Holly Springs, died at the hospital, according to the State Highway Patrol.
According to a Watauga County Sheriff’s Office deputy’s shift report, the Boone Police Department and the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office assisted the State Highway Patrol with the fatal wreck.
The female driver was arrested by N.C. Sheriff’s Highway Patrol for DWI and assault on a government official after kicking a deputy, according to the report, which noted she also had a outstanding warrant for failure to appear.
Groce’s court date is set for Nov. 10.
