Oct. 13, 2014. Erik Dyke, a double bassist with the NC Symphony, visited the pre-kindergarten classroom at Hardin Park Tuesday afternoon.

Dyke talked with the class about the musical elements of pitch, rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics and about the types of instruments (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion) and how they work, including hands on experience with several instruments.

The boy with the violin is Henry Norman. The teacher for this pre-k class is Elizabeth Hutelmyer and she is the person with the flute in one photo. She said the students thought this was a wonderful experience and wanted to know when Mr. Dyke would come back to the class.

The full Symphony presented a program called “What Makes Music Music?” for WCS third and fourth graders earlier that day at the Schaefer Performing Arts Center as part of the APPlause performing arts series of the ASU Office of Arts and Cultural Programs. See attached photos of the classroom visit.
