Enjoy This Labor Day Weekend at the ‘Art on the Greene’ Festival in Banner Elk

By Troy Brooks

Got some free time this Labor Day Weekend? Looking for a special gift for someone? Head on out to Banner Elk for the final installment of the “Art on the Greene” art show series at the Historic Banner Elk School for a wide variety of arts and crafts from regional and national artists. The best part? The entire event is free.

The “Art on the Greene” is the third and final show in a series of summer art festivals held at Banner Elk over the summer. The first two shows took place on Memorial Day and the Fourth of July and both events had great turnouts from the general public.

This weekend’s  show will host 40 artists from across the country. You can expect to find high quality crafts and items made by highly skilled artisans. It’s not just on display either — if you see something you like, you might just be able to take it home with you.

“We are a walk-in gallery,” said Kimberly Tufts, who is organizing the event. “Everything you can look at you can purchase.”

Artists will be representing a wide variety of art fields, including painting, photography, clay, glass, jewelry, wood, soap, leather, dog-items, clocks, rings, gemstones, beading and furniture.

“It’s really special to get hand-made items for a gift,” said Tufts. “Also, it really doesn’t matter if you’re on a tight budget. Prices for items range from $10 to several hundred, so there’s always something for everyone.”

Got a special vision in mind for an item or gift? Many of the artists are willing to do custom orders for their customers if you share your idea with them.

The show won’t be featuring many food vendors this weekend, but Banner Elk has several great restaurants to check out during the day.

Join the fun from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
