1) Art Mart’s Art Classes

The next session of classes begins Nov. 4! Art 1, for ages 6-11, are held Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m. or Thursday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. for 5 week sessions. Large scale acrylic on unprimed canvas using washes to render a beautiful landscape. An Asian themed wall hanging of rice paper and balsawood and a mystery project too! Art 2 is for ages 10 – 13 and is held Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. for $80 for a five week session. Large scale acrylic painting on unprimed and unstretched canvas with cut canvas adhered concentrating on positive and negative space. A large scale cardboard sculpture working toward a truly 360 degree presentation. Teen seminiar, for ages 12 and up, are held Mondays from 4-5:30 p.m. for $120 for a five week session. As always, the teen class is individually directed for each student to follow their own vision. Adult classes are offered year round as well. Please call 828-264-3135 with questions. 

2) CCC&TI Receives Grant to Train Unemployed, Underemployed 

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute recently received a North Carolina Back-to-Work grant from the N.C. Department of Commerce in the amount of $173,870. This will be the second time CCC&TI has received the grant, which provides resources for workforce development and job training. The grant provides financial assistance for unemployed and underemployed North Carolinians to train for new careers through the Electrical Lineman and Truck Driver Training Programs. Veterans and members of the N.C. National Guard also are eligible for assistance. During the first year of the program, both CCC&TI programs had successfully helped dozens of unemployed residents earn a degree and find a new career. CCC&TI administrators are hoping to see continued success in the coming year. For students who enroll in the program, the process will include assessment, career coaching with career exploration, skills gap training, virtual and hands on labs and job placement services. All students who successfully complete the program will receive program completion certificates as well as the Career Readiness certificate and their program specific stackable credentials. 

3) The Trojan Women Presented Nov. 6-10

The ASU Department of Theatre and Dance presents the timeless tragedy, “The Trojan Women” by Euripides, as adapted by Ellen McLaughlin, Wednesday through Saturday, Nov. 6-9, at 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee performance on Sunday, Nov. 10. The play follows four women who have lost their loved ones in the Trojan War and are now refugees in their own city. Ticket prices are $8 for students, $13 for faculty/staff and seniors, and $15 for adults. Tickets are available in person at the Valborg Theatre box office Monday through Friday 1-5 p.m. Valborg Theatre is located on the north side of Chapell Wilson Hall on Howard Street.  The door faces the back of the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts on King Street.  Parking is available in faculty lots after 5 p.m., and in the College Street parking deck near Belk Library and Information Commons after 5:30 p.m. Parking is also available in the Rivers Street parking deck and the Howard Street parking area adjacent to the Miles Annas Building.

4) Celebrate Singing 

The Watauga Arts Council will sponsor Celebrate Singing on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Boone United Methodist Church at 471 Market Street in Boone. This event is free and open to the public and will feature a number of singing styles and groups from the Triad and the High Country like Triad Harmony Express, Treble Attraction, 5th Edition Quartet, Harmony Express Quartet and Easy Livin’ Quartet. 

5) Girls BKB Pancake Breakfast

The 2nd annual Pancake Breakfast to support the Girls 5/6 Grade Basketball Program has been set for Saturday, Nov. 9, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at The Rock. The cost is $6 per plate which includes pancake, sausage or bacon and a drink. Proceeds go to support the Mighty Mountaineer Basketball Program. Rain date in Saturday, Nov. 16. There will be door prizes, so show your support and fuel up for basketball. 

6) Foxx to Host United States Service Academy Day for Fifth District Students Nov. 2

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) will host a United States Service Academy Day for local students at the Historic Broyhill Building in Clemmons on Saturday, Nov. 2. The event will feature representatives from America’s five military service academies and will allow local students the opportunity to ask questions and receive advice about compiling compelling admission and nomination applications. “North Carolina’s 5th Congressional District has a proud tradition of military service. Every year, some of our finest young men and women choose to contribute to this legacy by applying to attend our country’s prestigious uniformed service academies,” Congresswoman Foxx stated. “On Nov. 2, I am proud to host an event to give prospective applicants the opportunity to meet with representatives from each academy as they prepare to seek nominations and academy appointments in the future.”
