1) Quilt Meeting

The Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 1:30 p.m. We meet in the conference room on the second floor of the Senior Center on Poplar Grove Connector in Boone. Susan Edmonson, an award winning quilt maker, will be our guest speaker. She teaches, lectures and leads workshops throughout the southeast. Her program will be a “Mixed Media Trunk Show.” She has designed quilt patterns and kits, but now enjoys sewing with many different materials and elements to create unique art. 2) Meet the Candidates Scheduled for Oct. 8

The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce will host a Meet the Candidates Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Town of Boone Council Chambers on Blowing Rock Road beginning at 5:30 p.m. All the candidates for Mayor and Town Council have been invited to participate. Questions will be asked of all the candidates in a “round robin” format; each having an opportunity to answer first, but all answering the same question. The audience will be allowed to submit written questions during the forum. All questions will be asked by the moderator. Each response will have a one minute time limit and each candidate will have a two minute closing statement. This forum is not intended to be a debate between candidates or between the audience and the candidates, but rather an opportunity for the citizenry to hear each candidate’s position on topics important to all. In order to maintain decorum, political literature and signage will not be allowed in the room. If you wish to submit questions, please call 264-2225 or email danmeyer@boonechamber.com.

4) Watauga County in the Civil War

Michael Hardy, author of Watauga County in the Civil War, will be speaking and signing copies of his book in the Boone area. “My latest book, Watauga County, North Carolina, in the Civil War, will be hitting stands next week. This project means a great deal to me- I took eighteen years to research it. It is jammed with material – some of it old (but hopefully presented in a new light), and some of it is new material that you have probably never seen before. The book covers the War years, 1861-1865, and the events that took place in Old Watauga County. Also, there are chapters on the soldiers who marched away, Reconstruction, the Remembrance process (like the veteran reunions). and Unionists. So I would like to offer you a chance to order a signed copy of the book. I’ve set up a page just for that process. Please visit www.michaelhardy.com/cwwatauga for instructions on ordering online, or via mail. If you would like the book or books inscribed to someone, please make sure you include that in your note. Books are $17 each plus $3 shipping. Of course, I will be speaking and signing in the Boone area. This includes The Boone Heritage Festival (Oct. 12), Watauga Public Library (Oct. 22), Autumn Leaf Festival (Oct. 26), Black Bear Books (TBA). If you would like me to visit your group, please drop me a line. Thanks again to everyone who contributed over the years to this project.
