1) Contra Dance at the Apple Barn

The Boone Country Dancers are hosting a Contra Dance at the Apple Barn on Saturday June 8. Dean Snipes is the caller for this dance and ContraCulture is the band. All dances are taught, no partner is required and everyone is welcome. Beginners Lesson at 7:30, dance at 8:00. The Apple Barn is in Valle Crucis just off Hwy 194, 1 mile from Valle Crucis School. 2) Hunter’s Heroes: Run in Memory of Deputy William Mast, Jr. 

Saturday marks the 1st Annual Hunter’s Heroes 10 mile race is a race on foot in memory of Deputy William Mast, Jr. The public is welcome to join for this celebration picnic as well. We will be having a band, games and activities for children, a memorial area for Deputy Mast and much more. 

3) King Bees Live at Music in the Park

World-class musicians, the King Bees, open the Todd Summer Music series once again this year on Saturday. The King Bees have played their rocking blues all over the world, from the Lincoln Center in New York, to Mississippi juke joints to European music festivals. If you have not seen them perform in Cook Park, be sure to catch them this summer when they turn the park alive with one of the most entertaining shows you will ever see. 

4) Howard Street Exchange Festival

On Sunday, the Howard Street Exchange Festival will showcase the local nonprofits, artists, farmers, businesses and vendors including Appalachian Mountain Brewery. There will also be a stage with several bands playing throughout the night. 

5) 2013 Summer Dance Series

On Monday and Tuesday, the ASU Department of Theater and Dance presents this popular Summer Dance Series through June 26. The line-up includes rockette/jazz, krump/hip-hop, musical theater dance, African, yoga, gyrokinesis, contemporary dance, hula, Carolina shag and ballet. There is no obligation to attend all classes. Children aged 10 and older are welcome and younger children are welcome with an adult. 

6) Liberty Parade 2013: Fan Your Flames

This year’s parade will light up your life…literally! We are giving life to the element fire with a batiked silk parachute, warm and fuzzy costumes and riotously hot props. This year’s ickstarter campaign is up and running. Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing fundraising platform for creative projects. If we make our goal-yay! We get funded. If we don’t make our goal- sorry, no moolah. Funds will support workshops, materials, rent, insurance, staff pay and all of the things necessary to produce the Liberty Parade. Rewards are part of fun, so please let us shower you with gifts by making a pledge today!

7) Avery County Chamber Wine Tour

Beginning June 27 and continuing each fourth Tuesday of each month, there will be a wine tours beginning at noon visiting 1861 Farmhouse, Banner Elk Winery, Erick’s Cheese and Wine Shop, Grandfather Vineyards, Linville Falls Winery and Plumtree Vineyards. Only 50 tickets are being sold for the June Tour, so get your tickets before they are gone. Ticket price is $50 per person with wine tastings included in the price and transportation included. 

8) American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR and AED Course

These courses will be held on Tuesday, July 16 from 6-9 p.m. in the Watauga Medical Center Auditorium. The Cost is $40 and registration deadline is July 12. Class size is limited so you must call to pre-register and pre-pay at 268-8960. The course is designed for community members who want to learn CPR for adults, children and infants and how to help a choking victim and use an automated external defibrillator. Certification card is valid for 2 years. 

9) American Heart Association BLS for HCP Part II – Skills Check

On Tuesday July 16 from 5-6 p.m. at Watauga Medical Center Auditorium. Cost is $15. This course is for healthcare providers seeking an initial or renewal Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course completion card. Part 1 is online (www.onlineaha.org) can be completed in 2 hours. You must bring Part 1 completion certificate to the skills chec. The Skills check will take approximately one hour. 

10) American Heart Association First Aid Course

Tuesday July 30 from 6-9 p.m. at the Watauga Medical Center Adams Classroom. The cost is $30. This course is designed for community members who want to learn basic first aid skills like how to recognize and respond to different emergencies like heart attack, stroke, choking, bleeding, seizures, diabetic reactions, breathing problems, shock and environmental emergencies. Participants receive a certification card valid for 2 years.
