1) 14th Annual Mayview Madness 5K Set for Saturday, Sept. 21

The 2012 running of the Stick Boy Mayview Madness 5K race drew more than 320 runners – the largest in race history- and organizers are hoping for an even better turnout in 2013. The 14th annual 5K and one-mile kids run takes place here on Saturday, Sept. 21, with proceeds benefitting Blue Ridge Conservancy, helping to protect important land from development and providing public access in seven High Country counties. The scenic 5K course starts at 3:30 a.m. adjacent to the American Legion Hall and finishes in front of Bistro Roca restaurant, where post-race snacks will be provided and awards presented. The course winds through the historic Mayview neighborhood, with magnificent views along the route. With average race day high and low temperatures of 67 and 49 respectively, conditions should be perfect for running. This year’s one-mile kids run (8 a.m.) has a new title sponsor, Blue Ridge Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine (BRPAM), which is dedicated to getting children outside and active. Tracy Brown, Executive Director of the Blowing Rock TDA is a big fan of the race. “The Mayview Madness 5K continues to grow bigger and bigger every year, and we’re happy to host the race and its paticipants. Blowing Rock has always been a community that embraces a healthy lifestyle and outdoor activities, so the Mayview Madness fits right in. We also support the goals of the Blue Ridge Conservancy since its work is key to protecting our land and water resources,” Brown said. The 5K race will have prizes donated by local businesses for the top three male and female finishers in each of ten age groups, including a separate category for masters finishers.
